Her remarkable feats include becoming the fastest woman and the youngest person to circumnavigate the earth in a solo yacht race in 2005. One of her other great triumphs was the spectacular second place she won in the 2000 Vendée Globe, the "Everest" of sailing, when she raced solo non-stop around the world. Dean Barker, an ambitious and enthusiastic sportsman, was invited to helm the Emirates Team New Zealand boat at the Americas Cup in 2000, and ever since he has been a loyal member of the Team. In 2003 Dean Barker became skipper of the Emirates Team New Zealand and led them to the next Americas Cup. OMEGA's partnership with Emirates Team New Zealand began in 1995. The company continues its strong association with the Americas Cup and will once more be the Official Watch of Emirates Team New Zealand in 2007. At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games he won eight gold medals! OMEGA is proud to have such an exceptional athlete as an ambassador. At the age of 20, Alexander Popov won a historic 50 and 100 metres freestyle double at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics before repeating the feat at the Atlanta Games four years later. Following eight years as swimming sprint champion, he retired after the 2004 Athens Olympics. His swimming technique is exceptional and will remain in the memory of many. Michael Schumacher is regarded as the best racing driver ever and the most notable figure in the recent history of Formula 1. He has won 6 further World Champion Titles since his first in 1994. In 1995, he demonstrated his driving skills and great racing potential by becoming the youngest double Formula 1 World Champion. A highly generous person, dedicated to helping create a better world, he has funded projects for the construction of a school in Senegal, a clinic in Sarajevo and a centre for street children in Peru. Ian Thorpe, also known as the Thorpedo, has become one of the greatest swimmers ever. Only 25 years old, Ian Thorpe has already broken 22 world records. At two Olympic Games, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, he collected a total of 5 gold medals, 3 silver and 2 bronze. This unique sportsman has also won 11 gold medals at the FINA World Championships, adding a further silver and a bronze to an already impressive collection, including many Commonwealth Games titles.
